Biography

ˇĄThis was warm, passionate and heart-felt playing from a pianist whose searching musicianship comes out on top.ˇ¦

Review by Manus Carey in Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Journal.

Tau Wey is emerging as one of the few young pianists whose outstanding virtuosity is combined with a sensitivity for programming unusual works. Believing that music needs to reach out to everyone and reflect the styles, fashions and concerns of our times, Tau has embraced a concert repertoire that includes and goes beyond the standard classical composers. Chinese folk music, musicals, pop/rock music and music hall songs feature in his programmes, many of them in his own transcriptions.

Through his life, study and work as pianist and teacher, which has taken him from Taiwan, Germany and USA to England, Tau brings a rich and diverse experience to the people who listen to his music. In the community music scene, Tau has become an expert on music hall songs, which he performs regularly for senior citizens in concerts in care homes for the elderly. He has also recorded several CDs for Music Sales/Chester publications and contributed to the book reviews in the European Piano Teachers Association Journal.

His accolade of prizes include First Prizes in the Beethoven Piano Society of Europe Competition 2003, Jaques Samuel Pianos Trinity prize 2003, and Trinity College Joseph Weingarten piano competition 2005; Second Prize in the Norah Sande (Eastbourne) competition 2007; and a prize in the Tunbridge Wells International Young Artist competition 2004.

His festival appearances have included the BBC Proms Festival at the Royal Albert Hall and Radio 3 (2005), Aldeburgh Festival of Music and Arts (2004), and Cambridge Music Festival (2003). He gave his London debut solo recital at Blackheath Halls in 2006. In December 2007 He will give a debut recital at the Music Forum in Taipei/Taiwan.

Tau was born in Taiwan in 1982, and educated at the University of Cambridge, Trinity College of Music (London), and Mannes College of Music (New York). His teachers have included Yonty Solomon, Douglas Finch, and Jacob Lateiner. His studies were supported by the Tillett Trust Educational award. He holds the post of Musician in Residence at Sevenoaks School, Kent, in 2007-2008, and teaches for the Bromley Youth Music Trust.
